Yuck Old Paint
Personal Portrait - Raea
This portrait was created as part of a community-based art event designed to support local business and creative engagement. Rather than a mural, the work was executed on canvas using reclaimed materials, with the specific directive to repurpose discarded paint that would otherwise have entered the landfill. The available palette—navy blue, maroon, yellow, and earth tones—was intentionally limited and unconventional, requiring careful layering and restraint to achieve depth, cohesion, and likeness.
Painted using surplus material from the subject’s own startup, Yuck Old Paint, the portrait became both a representation of the individual and a material reflection of the business itself. The finished piece was later exhibited through the local arts community and remains in the owner’s personal collection, underscoring the role of constraint, reuse, and collaboration as generative forces in the work.
We can work within constraints, repurpose materials, and contribute meaningfully to creative ecosystems.
